History of Chula VistaIn 1795, Chula Vista was part of a Spanish land grant known as Rancho Del Rey, or the Kings Landing. In 1831, when Mexico formed its own government, Rancho Del Rey became known as Rancho Del Nacion, or Ranch of the Nation. Rancho Del Nacion encompassed the area which now comprises National City , Chula Vista , Bonita, Sunnyside, and Sweetwater Valley . What was once used as grazing land would later be granted to John Forster in 1845 by his father in law, Mexican Governor Pio Pico. Forster would operate this land as a ranch for 10 years before selling it to a French Developer, who later sold it to the Kimball Brothers in 1868. Brother Frank Kimball was responsible for bringing the Santa Fe Railroad to San Diego . The first terminus was located in National City . The Santa Fe Railroad Co. and professional town planner WG Dickerson formed the San Diego Land and Town Co. It was at this time that Chula Vista was founded upon what was known as the “best 5,000 acres of this tract.” James D. Schuyler suggested the name “ Chula Vista ” which can be roughly translated to mean beautiful view in Spanish, and the San Diego Land and Town Co. adopted it shortly thereafter. The Sweetwater dam was built in 1888, bringing much needed water to the land. An agriculture boom soon followed, and Chula Vista became the largest lemon growing center of the world for a period of time. The townsfolk got together in 1911, whereupon they voted in favor of incorporation for Chula Vista . Chula Vista was doing well until a freeze in 1913 and droughts in 1914-15 tested the town's mettle. When the dam broke and the floods came, the agricultural business was irreversibly damaged. WWII brought revitalization to the area, when the Rohr Aircraft Corp relocated to Chula Vista just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor . The demand for housing brought on by Rorh's relocated employees changed the face of Chula Vista , and the lemon orchards did not return. Post-WWII saw Chula Vista grow into one of San Diego 's largest communities. Most recently, continued success of the city has seen development move eastward, with the Eastlake , Rancho Del Ray, and Otay Ranch communities.
