La Jolla Real Estate History
Although La Jolla was incorporated in 1850, the first permanent settlers didn't show up until 1869, when Daniel and Samuel Sizer each bought 80 acre plots from the city of San Diego. Purchased for $1.25 an acre, it is more recently worth $1.25 million an acre.
“Magnificent day at La Jolla” Frank Terrill Botsford would write in his diary as he arrived in 1886. Botsford bought land in La Jolla, but it was he who would be the first to develop his land, earning the title “Father of La Jolla”.
Frank Botsford sold one quarter of his land to George Heald, with whom he surveyed and subdivided the land. Together with auctioneer Bob Pennell, they auctioned off the subdivided land.
Growth to La Jolla was stimulated as the railroad came to town in 1890. Developers saw the potential for the coastal town and began to construct resorts to attract visitors to the area. The La Jolla Park Hotel opened in 1893, followed by the Union Congregational Church, and La Jolla Women's Club (which started as a reading circle). La Jolla would quickly develop a dedication to the arts, with Anna Held and her green Dragon artists' colony, where artists and novelists could live for free.
Ellen Browning Scripps, the newspaper heiress settled in La Jolla in 1896. Today you can find many institutions bearing her name (Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Scripps Medical Center, Scripps Pier, Ellen Browning Scripps Park, to name a few).
At the turn of the 20 th century, La Jolla was booming. The first building of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography was constructed in 1909, and in 1913 the Grande Colonial Hotel opened with 28 apartments and 25 single rooms. After many renovations, the hotel is still standing and open for business.
The 1930's brought Hollywood visitors, and by the 1940's and 1950's, the stars began producing plays at the summer playhouse. Today, it is the famous La Jolla Playhouse.
After the stock market crash in 1929 stunted new home development, post WWII brought La Jolla back to life. 7700 people called La Jolla home in 1943 and by 1960 over 17,000 people lived here. UCSD came to town in the mid-1960s, and new homes were found for the La Jolla Sanitarium (later Scripps Memorial Hospital ) and Scripps Clinic, which moved up to Torrey Pines Mesa.
La Jolla 's history is still evident in today in much of the original Mediterranean architecture. Although it is a mystery as to where the name “La Jolla” came from, whether derived from the Native American woholee , meaning “hole in the mountains,” or a derivative of the Spanish term la joya , meaning “jewel,” one thing is certain, La Jolla Real Estate is a rare and exceptional place to call home.
