History of La Mesa

Originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians, it wasn't until after the Spanish Colonization and the Mission de Alcala that La Mesa started to develop the unique identity that is evident today, in both the historic district and modern homes.

When Mexico became independent, Santiago Arguella was granted 60,000 acres. Robert Allison then purchased 4,000 acres from Arguella that he used as a ranch and rest stop- known as Allison Springs , in 1868.

In 1894, A.S. Crowder and Allison filed the La Mesa Springs Subdivision Map, and the town became official. An artists' community was developed by Ed Fletcher and William Gross in the eastern portion of the town. Residential building was initiated in 1906, when Sherman C. Grable acquired 100 acres near the downtown village. La Mesa was officially incorporated on Feb. 16 th , 1912.
